Die renommierte Autorin Jun-hee (LEE Hye-young) besucht eine entfremdete Kollegin, die mittlerweile eine Buchhandlung am Rande Seouls besitzt. Während ihres Aufenthalts trifft sie auf alte Bekannte, unter anderem einen Filmproduzenten, mit dem sie sich zuvor zerstritten hat. Sie hatte beabsichtigt, eines ihrer Werke durch ihn zu verfilmen, doch der Versuch scheiterte. Bei einem Spaziergang trifft Jun-hee auf Gil-soo (KIM Min-hee), eine Schauspielerin, die sich, wie Jun-hee, in einer kreativen Tiefphase befindet. Erst Konversationen mit Gil-soo inspirieren sie schließlich zu einem gemeinsamen Projekt. Die Macht des Zufalls und die Bedeutung der Wahrhaftigkeit in kreativen Kreisen bestimmen die subtile Handlung des Dramas.The Novelist’s Film war HONGs dritte konsekutive Einsendung für den Hauptpreis der Berlinale, wo das Drama auch seine Premiere feierte. Es handelt sich fast ausschließlich um einen Schwarz-Weiß-Film.

Renowned author Jun-hee (LEE Hye-young) visits an estranged colleague who now owns a bookshop on the outskirts of Seoul. During her stay, she meets old acquaintances, including a film producer with whom she had previously fallen out. She had intended to have one of her works made into a film by him, but the attempt failed. During a walk, Jun-hee meets Gil-soo (KIM Min-hee), an actress who, like Jun-hee, is in a creative slump. It is conversations with Gil-soo that finally inspire her to work on a joint project. The power of coincidence and the importance of truthfulness in creative circles determine the subtle plot of the drama.
The Novelist’s Film was HONG’s third consecutive submission for the main prize at the Berlinale, where the drama also premiered. It is almost exclusively a black-and-white production.
