Im Politdrama Kingmaker wird SEO Chang-daes (LEE Sun-kyun) Geschichte als Wahlkampfstratege für den oppositionellen Politiker KIM Woon-bum (SOL Kyung-gu) erzählt. Vor den Wahlen im Jahr 1971 entscheidet sich der gelernte Apotheker dazu, die Wahlkampfkampagne des Politikers zu unterstützen. Er verschafft sich einen Platz in seinem Team und verhilft KIM Woon-bum zur Präsidentschaftskandidatur. Beide vereint der Wunsch, das Land zum Besseren zu entwickeln. Doch ihre Ansichten kollidieren, wenn es um die Mittel geht, mit denen dieses Ziel erreicht werden soll. Damit stellt der Film die Themen Integrität und Ambition einander gegenüber.
Regisseur BYUN Sung-hyun gewann bereits für seine vorherigen Filmprojekte Anerkennung. Unter anderem feierte sein Film The Merciless 2017 bei der Midnight Screenings Section in Cannes Premiere und schaffte es in viele Best-of-2017 Listen von Kritiker*innen.

The political drama Kingmaker tells the story of SEO Chang-dae (LEE Sun-kyun) – an election strategist for oppositional politician KIM Woon-bum (SOL Kyung-gu). Before the elections in 1971, the trained pharmacist decides to support the politician’s election campaign. He earns a spot on his team and helps KIM Woon-bum run for president. Both share the desire to develop the country for the better. But their views collide when it comes to the means by which that end is to be achieved. The film thus juxtaposes the themes of integrity and ambition.
Director BYUN Sung-hyun has already been recognized for his previous film projects. Among others, his film The Merciless premiered at the Midnight Screenings Section in Cannes in 2017 and made it onto many critics‘ best-of-2017 lists.
