Tae-il (JANG Dong-yoon) wächst in ärmlichen Verhältnissen im Südkorea der 1960er-Jahre auf. Schon in jungen Jahren erlernt er das Schneiderhandwerk von seinem Vater (JIN Seon-kyu) und muss helfen, die Familie zu ernähren. Mit dem Umzug nach Seoul beginnt Tae-il in einer der vielen Fabriken der Stadt zu arbeiten. Wie er schnell feststellen muss, sind die Arbeitsbedingungen dort schlecht und existierende Arbeitsrechte werden ignoriert. Um das Leid der Arbeiter*innen zu beenden, setzt er alles daran, eine Bewegung in Gang zu bringen, die die ungerechten Verhältnisse zerschlagen kann.
Der Animationsfilm basiert auf wahren Begebenheiten. Der Protagonist CHUN Tae-il ist eine Symbolfigur der koreanischen Arbeiterbewegung, dessen Geschichte schon mehrmals verfilmt wurde. Wie Regisseur HONG Jun-pyo mit seiner animierten Neuinterpretation beweist, ist das Thema weiterhin aktuell.

Tae-il (JANG Dong-yoon) grows up in poor circumstances in the 1960s in South Korea. At a young age, his father (JIN Seon-kyu) teaches him how to tailor, so he can help to provide for the family. When he moves to Seoul, Tae-il starts working in one of the city’s many factories. He soon learns that the working conditions are bad and existing labour rights are being ignored. In order to end the suffering of the workers, he does everything he can to start a movement that can dismantle the unjust conditions.
The animated film is based on true events. The protagonist CHUN Tae-il is a symbolic figure of the Korean labour movement whose story has been adapted into several films. However, the central theme of the material is still relevant, as director HONG Jun-pyo proves with his animated reinterpretation.
