YANG Mi-ja (YOON Jeong-hee) bekommt in ihrem 66. Lebensjahr Alzheimer diagnostiziert und erhält von ihrem Arzt den Rat, sich körperlich und geistig fit zu halten. Daraufhin schreibt sie sich in einem Poesie-Kurs an der Volkshochschule ein, mit dem Ziel, bis zum Ende des Sommers ein Gedicht zu schreiben. Zeitgleich kommt es zum Selbstmord einer Schülerin in Mi-jas Kleinstadt. Mi-ja findet heraus, dass ihr Enkel etwas mit dem Tod des Mädchens zu tun hat und möchte mehr über die Gründe der Tat erfahren.
Poetry ist LEE Chang-dongs dritte Regiearbeit und sein bis dahin größter internationaler Erfolg. Seine Zusammenarbeit mit der 2023 verstorbenen Schauspielerin YOON Jeong-hee ist bemerkenswert, da YOON selbst unter einer fortgeschrittenen Demenz litt und deshalb die Rolle unter besonderer Anstrengung spielte. Der Film wurde mit zahlreichen renommierten Filmpreisen ausgezeichnet.
YANG Mi-ja (YOON Jeong-hee) is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at the age of 66 and is advised by her doctor to keep physically and mentally fit. Therefore, she enrolls in a poetry course at the adult education center with the aim of writing a poem by the end of the summer. At the same time, a schoolgirl in Mi-ja’s small town commits suicide. Mi-ja discovers that her grandson has something to do with the girl’s death and wants to find out more about the reasons for the incident.
Poetry is LEE Chang-dong’s third directorial work and his biggest international success until then. His collaboration with actress YOON Jeong-hee, who died in 2023, is remarkable, as YOON herself suffered from advanced dementia and therefore played the role with particular effort. The film has won numerous renowned film awards.
