Die filmische Handlung spielt Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts. AHN Jung-geun (HYUN Bin) steht an der Spitze der koreanischen Unabhängigkeitsbewegung und kämpft seit Jahren für die Befreiung von der japanischen Besatzung. Nach einem besonders blutigen Gefecht ist er der einzige überlebende Widerstandskämpfer. In der Hoffnung, das gebrochene Vertrauen seiner Mitkämpfer zurückzugewinnen und das Andenken seiner gefallenen Kameraden zu ehren, beschließt AHN Jung-geun, eine gewagte Operation durchzuführen: Er und seine Verbündeten müssen in die Stadt Harbin vordringen und den japanischen Premierminister Itō Hirobumi (Lily Franky) ermorden.
Der Film über Koreas Nationalhelden beruht auf wahren Begebenheiten und war ein großer Erfolg in den südkoreanischen Kinos. Harbin erreicht das Niveau eines Epos, welches die Geschichte des koreanischen Widerstands in Form einer biblischen Parabel von Opfer, Verrat und Erlösung präsentiert.

The film’s plot takes place in the early 20th century. AHN Jung-geun (HYUN Bin) is at the forefront of the Korean independence movement and has been fighting for years for liberation from Japanese occupation. After a particularly bloody battle, he is the only surviving resistance fighter. Hoping to regain the broken trust of his fellow fighters and to honor the memory of his fallen comrades, AHN Jung-geun decides to carry out a daring operation: He and his allies must advance into the city of Harbin and assassinate Japanese Prime Minister Itō Hirobumi (Lily Franky).
The film about Korea’s national hero is based on true events and was a huge success in South Korean cinemas. Harbinreaches the level of an epic, presenting the story of the Korean resistance in the form of a biblical parable of sacrifice, betrayal, and redemption.
