Die Anfänge Project Ks und des koreanischen Filmfestivals am Uni Campus Bockenheim
Das erste koreanische Filmfestival Frankfurt, damals unter dem Namen „Project K – The Korean Film Festival“, wurde organisiert von Project K e.V., den Koreastudien der Goethe Universität Frankfurt, Korean German Network e.V. und dem Generalkonsulat der Republik Korea Frankfurt. Die letzteren drei Gruppierungen setzten sich erstmals 2012 zusammen und gründeten den Verein Project K mit dem Ziel Türöffner für Film und Kultur Koreas in Frankfurt und später bundesweit zu sein.

The beginnings of Project K and the Korean Film Festival at Uni Campus Bockenheim
The first Korean Film Festival Frankfurt, then called „Project K – The Korean Film Festival“, was organized by Project K e.V., Korean Studies of Goethe University Frankfurt, Korean German Network e.V. and the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea Frankfurt. The latter three groups first got together in 2012 and founded the Project K association with the goal of being a door opener for Korean film and culture in Frankfurt and later nationwide.

Die erste Ausgabe des „Project K- The Korean Film Festival“ fand vom 12. bis zum 14. Oktober 2012 am Uni Campus Bockenheim statt. Neben 21 Filmvorstellungen, unter Anderem Filmklassiker wie KIM Ki-duks „Frühling, Sommer, Herbst, Winter… und Frühling“ und „Pieta“, BONG Joon-hos „Mother“ oder PARK Chan-wooks „Oldboy“, gab es ein facettenreiches Begleitprogramm, das sich über die drei Tage hinzog.
In der Hanji Ausstellung wurde die traditionelle koreanische Papierkunst vorgestellt, die vielfältige Verwendungen hat, bis zu 1000 Jahre haltbar und obendrein ästhetisch ist. Außerdem konnten die Besucher*innen beim Hangeul Stand entweder selbst, oder durch Anleitung eines Kalligraphen ihre Namen in koreanischer Schrift auf Hanji schreiben.

The first edition of „Project K- The Korean Film Festival“ was held at Uni Campus Bockenheim from October 12 to 14, 2012. In addition to 21 film screenings, including film classics such as KIM Ki-duk’s „Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter… and Spring“ and „Pieta,“ BONG Joon-ho’s „Mother“ and PARK Chan-wook’s „Oldboy,“ there was a multi-faceted accompanying program that spanned the three days.
The Hanji exhibition featured traditional Korean paper art, which has multiple uses, lasts up to 1000 years, and is aesthetic to boot. In addition, at the Hangeul booth, visitors* could either write their names in Korean script on hanji themselves, or through the guidance of a calligrapher.

Bei der Fotoaktion konnten Besucher*innen Hanbok, die traditionelle koreanische Tracht, anprobieren und sich fotografieren lassen. Abgerundet wurde das Kulturangebot mit der Vorführung von Darye, der koreanischen Teezeremonie und der Zubereitung von Tee.

At the photo event, visitors could try on Hanbok, the traditional Korean costume, and have their picture taken. The cultural program was rounded off with a demonstration of Darye, the Korean tea ceremony and the preparation of tea.

Die Musik Koreas und vor allem K-Pop war vertreten durch die Möglichkeit beim koreanische Karaoke Noraebang zu singen oder auch einfach nur zuzuhören und durch die Eröffnungsparty am Freitag, sowie die K-Pop Party am Samstag. Um das Kulturerlebnis vollkommen zu machen, gab es die Möglichkeit Köstlichkeiten der koreanischen Küche beim HANSIK Stand sowie koreanische Snacks und Getränke in der K-Lounge zu probieren.

The music of Korea and especially K-Pop was represented by the possibility to sing at the Korean Karaoke Noraebang or just listen to it and by the opening party on Friday, as well as the K-Pop party on Saturday. To make the cultural experience complete, there was the opportunity to taste delicacies of Korean cuisine at the HANSIK booth, as well as Korean snacks and drinks at the K-Lounge.

Im darauffolgenden Jahr und der zweiten und letzten Ausgabe von „Project K – The Korean Film Festival“ am Uni Campus Bockenheim wurden vom 17. bis zum 20. Oktober 2013 insgesamt 18 Filmvorstellungen gezeigt. Auch in diesem Jahr war das Begleitprogramm mit den Angeboten des zuvorkommenden Jahres geschmückt, wobei es sogar ergänzt wurde. Unter dem Motto „4 Days in Seoul“ wurden Besucher*innen in die fünf beliebten Stadtteile Seouls Namdaemun, Hongdae, Itaewon, Myeong-dong und Insa-dong entführt und bekamen die koreanische Welt mitten in Frankfurt zu spüren.
Als Ergänzung zum vergangenen Jahr gab es zur Eröffnung am 17. Oktober eine Image Performance des renommierten Künstlers KIM Baek-ki der Gruppe KoPAS (Korean Performance Art Spirit), in der mit unterschiedlichen Farben und symbolischen Objekten die Besucher*innen in die innere Welt der Menschheit entführt wurden.

The following year and the second and final edition of „Project K – The Korean Film Festival“ at Uni Campus Bockenheim, a total of 18 film screenings were held from October 17 to 20, 2013. Also this year, the accompanying program was decorated with the offerings of the obliging year, even adding to it. Under the motto „4 Days in Seoul“, visitors* were taken to Seoul’s five popular districts of Namdaemun, Hongdae, Itaewon, Myeong-dong and Insa-dong and got to feel the Korean world in the middle of Frankfurt.
As a complement to last year’s opening on October 17, there was an image performance by renowned artist KIM Baek-ki of the KoPAS (Korean Performance Art Spirit) group, in which different colors and symbolic objects were used to transport visitors* to the inner world of humanity.

Hinzu kam außerdem der Baduk Workshop, ein Brettspiel mit Steinen, das als das älteste dokumentierte Brettspiel der Menschheit gilt, bei dem sich die Besucher*innen das Strategiespiel nicht nur erklären lassen konnten, sondern auch selbst ausprobieren konnten.

Besonders machte dieses Jahr die K-Talks zu den Themen „Korean Cinema“, „The Makings of Korean Wave“ und „130 Jahre deutsch-koreanische Beziehung“, bei denen nach den Reden kleine Gesprächsrunden eröffnet wurden und ein Austausch stattfand.

Das Ziel Project Ks hat sich bis heute nicht geändert, nämlich Film und Kultur Koreas zu verbreiten. Project K hat seine Wurzeln am Uni Campus Bockenheim und besteht auch heute noch überwiegend aus Koreanistik Student*innen der Goethe Universität. Außerdem fanden auch Organisation und Treffen bis zur Pandemie am Campus statt.
Micael A., der Mitglied bei Project K seit den Anfängen war, hat die Arbeit in der Organisierung des Festivals als stressig und schwer beschrieben, aber umso wichtiger sei die Teamarbeit denn „da sah man, wie motiviert alle [Mitglieder] waren dieses Festival zum Leben zu bringen und wie groß ihr Interesse für die koreanische Filmkultur und Korea an sich ist. Kein Mitglied hatte Angst sich die Finger schmutzig zu machen, zu schwitzen und mit anzupacken.“ Und so sollte es auch die darauffolgenden Jahre trotz kommender und gehender Mitglieder sein.
Und so hat sich aus einem kleinen 3-tägigen Filmfestival am Uni Campus Bockenheim über die letzten 10 Jahre das größte koreanische Filmfestival Deutschlands entwickelt, das dieses Jahr an mehreren Standorten Frankfurts und durch ein Online-Programm sogar deutschlandweit die Kultur und vor Allem die Filmwelt Koreas dem deutschen Publikum näherbringt.

The goal of Project K has not changed until today, namely to spread Korean film and culture. Project K has its roots at the University Campus Bockenheim and still consists mainly of Korean studies students* of Goethe University. In addition, organization and meetings also took place on campus until the pandemic.
Micael A., who has been a member of Project K since the beginning, described the work in organizing the festival as stressful and difficult, but the teamwork was all the more important because „there you could see how motivated all [members] were to bring this festival to life and how great their interest is in Korean film culture and Korea itself. No member was afraid to get their fingers dirty, sweat, and pitch in.“ And so it was to be for the ensuing years, despite members coming and going.
And so, over the past 10 years, a small 3-day film festival at the University Campus Bockenheim has developed into Germany’s largest Korean film festival, which this year brings the culture and, above all, the film world of Korea closer to German audiences at several locations in Frankfurt and, through an online program, even throughout Germany.
