The political drama Kingmaker tells the story of SEO Chang-dae (LEE Sun-kyun) – an election strategist for oppositional politician KIM Woon-bum (SOL Kyung-gu). Before the elections in 1971, the trained pharmacist decides to support the politician’s election campaign. He earns a spot on his team and helps KIM Woon-bum run for president. Both share the desire to develop the country for the better. But their views collide when it comes to the means by which that end is to be achieved. The film thus juxtaposes the themes of integrity and ambition.
Director BYUN Sung-hyun has already been recognized for his previous film projects. Among others, his film The Merciless premiered at the Midnight Screenings Section in Cannes in 2017 and made it onto many critics’ best-of-2017 lists.
